Trading is a beggar-my-neighbour game individual traders can win, but traders in general can't, yet it's the game predominantly played by institutional investors. It drives short-termism in our biggest companies, jeopardises the profits they will earn in future and the returns due to their ultimate owners, savers. If our agents won't do the right thing, maybe private investors can. But what is the right thing?
